What do I use balsamic vinegar for?
Balsamic vinegar has many uses in the kitchen and is suitable for both savory and sweet dishes. Here are some of the most common uses:
- Salads: Balsamic vinegar is a classic ingredient in salad dressings, often mixed with olive oil, salt and pepper.
- Marinades: It is used to marinate meat, fish or vegetables. The vinegar helps to intensify the flavors and tenderize the meat.
- Sauces and reductions: Balsamic can be boiled down to make a thicker, sweeter sauce that goes well with grilled meats, vegetables or even desserts such as ice cream.
- Vegetables and antipasti: It goes well with roasted or grilled vegetables such as tomatoes, zucchinis or peppers.
- Cheese: A splash of balsamic vinegar goes perfectly with mature cheese, especially Parmigiano-Reggiano.
- Fruit and desserts: it can be drizzled on fresh fruit such as strawberries or figs to emphasize the sweetness, or over vanilla ice cream for a sweet and sour note
